To investigate the incidence of infectious diseases among human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) infected individuals, we examined 239 out of 261 HIV infected individuals who were reported up to April, 1993. Mean follow-up period of 239 individuals
including
40 dead AIDS patients was 29.6 months. CD4 cells were measured by flow cytometry using Simultest reagent. The incidences of infectious diseases were as follows: Herpes zoster 26(10.9%), pulmonary tuberculosis 17(7.1%), candidiasis 17(7.1%).
Pneumocystis
carinii pneumonia PCP 15(6.2%), cytomegalovirus(CMV) retinitis 6(2.5%), cryptococcal meningitis 3(1.3%), pneumonia 3(1.3%) by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumlonid, abscesses or crbuncle by Staphylococcus aureus 3(1.3%), cutaneous
herpes
simplex 3(1.3%) and varicell 1(0.4%). Median CD4 counts in HIV individuals with tuberculosis, herpes zoster and PCP were 270/uL. 249/uL, and 49/uL, respectively. CD4 count was less than 100/ul in 14 out of 15 cases with PCP(14/15), CMV
reinitis(5/6),
cryptococcal meningits93/3) and candidiasis(12/17).
This study suggests that careful examination for tuberculosis and PCP is needed for Kkorean HIV patients with low CD4 counts.
